IAEA chief calls on UN countries regarding danger at Zaporizhia NPP

The Director-General of the International Nuclear Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Mariano Grossi, called on the UN member states regarding the continuation of military operations around the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Station in Ukraine.

Grossi said at the opening session of the Tenth Review Conference of the Parties to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) that the situation in the region is very sensitive and complicated:

"All principles of nuclear safety have been violated around the Zaporizhzhia NPP, which is under the occupation of Russia. I have visited the war-torn region twice, and I want to emphasize that the situation is dire. We cannot allow this to continue. We continue to look for ways out of the problem. It is important to see the presence of the UN in the region and to feel its participation in the processes. This is a global problem, all countries should contribute to finding ways out of the situation."

The Director-General recalled the tragedy that occurred in 1986 due to the explosion of a power unit in Chernobyl and said that there are six units at the Zaporizhzhia NPP.

According to him, military activity around the plant can collapse the nuclear facility.
