Israeli police apprehend 20 people due to protests

Israeli police have detained around 20 people in East Jerusalem over suspicions that they may participate in riots, said spokesman for the Israeli police Mikhail Zingerman, Report informs, citing RIA Novosti.

The Mann agency said earlier that Israeli law enforcement officers began arresting Palestinians following the mass unrest that erupted in Jerusalem last night.

Earlier, the Red Crescent said that the number of those who suffered in the clashes between Palestinians and Israeli border police in East Jerusalem has risen to 205. The Israeli police said 17 officers suffered.

Riots on Friday evening broke out in two districts of East Jerusalem - near the Temple Mount and in Sheikh Jarrah, where an Israeli court ordered the eviction of several Arab families, which has led to protests that have been escalating into riots for more than a week. Against this background, the head of the Palestinian National Authority, Mahmoud Abbas, instructed the Palestinian representative to the UN to request a meeting of the Security Council to discuss the events in East Jerusalem.
