UK authorities have detained more than 820 migrants trying to penetrate the country via La Manche, which separates the island from mainland Europe. It has been a record number in one day, Sky News reports, citing the UK Interior Ministry.
Report informs, citing RIA Novosti, that the French authorities detained 193 illegal migrants.
The previous record was on August 12, when the UK authorities could prevent 592 migrants from entering the country.
Great Britain is attractive for illegal migrants for its social program, an opportunity to get a refugee status, and financial benefits. In July, UK and France agreed to strengthen the fight against illegal migration. In particular, they agreed to double the number of police officers patrolling French beaches to prevent the movement of boats from the French coast of the strait.
