The international community should establish new nuclear-weapon-free zones worldwide, said Izumi Nakamitsu, UN Under-Secretary-General and High Representative for Disarmament Affairs, Report informs.
Nakamitsu made the announcement at an international conference focused on strengthening cooperation between nuclear-weapon-free zones.
“Efforts to create zones in regions such as the Arctic, Northeast Asia, and Central Europe should be encouraged. Creating a new zone in the Middle East should remain a priority,” Nakamitsu stated.
She added that the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza and the risk of escalating conflict in the Middle East highlight the urgency and importance of establishing such a zone.
