US approves potential sale of anti-tank systems to Taiwan for $180 mln

The US State Department has approved the possible sale of Volcano anti-tank mine-laying systems to Taiwan for an estimated $180 million, the Pentagon said on Wednesday.

Report informs via foreign media that, according to State Department officials, the delivery of Volcano will increase the ability of the Taiwanese armed forces to withstand "current and future threats" and "asymmetric warfare."

On December 26, the Taiwan Ministry of Defense reported the largest violation of its air defense zone by Chinese military aircraft on record. According to the agency, 47 aircraft crossed the so-called median line of the Taiwan Strait.
