Azerbaijan, Georgia mull joint construction of border checkpoints

Georgian Finance Minister Ivane Matchavariani has met with Azerbaijani Ambassador to this country Faig Guliyev, the Georgian bureau of Report informs referring to the Georgian Finance Ministry.

The parties discussed cooperation between the two countries in both bilateral and multilateral formats.

Matchavariani noted that Azerbaijan is a strategic partner of Georgia, adding that the two countries, which enjoy exemplary friendly relations, share common economic and geopolitical interests.

At the meeting, the sides noted the importance of partnership in the trade, economic, transit, and transport spheres.

Particular attention was paid to the project of joint construction of border checkpoints. Border crossing procedures will be significantly accelerated and simplified, and transport and trade links between the two countries will be strengthened.

There are opportunities for the further expansion of information exchange between the relevant government agencies of the two partner countries, and increasing the efficiency of customs procedures.

During the conversation, coordinating the activities of customs authorities in the context of the COVID pandemic was also raised. It was noted that this could ensure uninterrupted supplies of products not only between the two countries but also in the region as a whole.

The parties expressed their hope the impact of the COVID pandemic on the economies worldwide will declease. The finance minister wished the Azerbaijani ambassador success in his work and expressed his readiness for cooperation.

The meeting was also attended by Deputy Finance Minister Lasha Khutsishvili, Head of Tax Service Levan Kakava, and Head of Customs Department Mamuka Jangulashvili.
