Belarus tightens state border controls

The State Border Committee of Belarus is strengthening the protection of the state border, with particular attention paid to its Western direction.

The official representative of the State Border Committee Anton Bychkovsky told TASS, Report says. 

"In connection with the country's current situation, the border service agencies are taking measures to tighten the protection of the state border. Special emphasis is placed on its Western direction."

Belarus held presidential elections on August 9. According to the final results, incumbent President Alexander Lukashenko won the country's most popular vote held years later for the sixth time. As a result, peaceful protests began in several parts of the country. Thousands of people were detained in clashes with police. Svetlana Tikhanovskaya, Lukashenko's rival from the opposition, urged the security forces not to apply force against the people.
