Georgian peacekeepers to leave Afghanistan

"NATO has decided to phase out its mission in Afghanistan by September this year. Therefore, according to the schedule agreed with NATO, Georgian units will also leave Afghanistan," Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili wrote this on his Facebook page, Report informs.

He said that Georgia is holding intensive consultations with its strategic partner, the United States, and the Georgian contingent will be withdrawn from Afghanistan after the agreement.

The PM thanked every Georgian service member who made a contribution to Euro-Atlantic integration in Georgia and took part in a complex and responsible mission.

Garibashvili stressed that Georgia joined the NATO Resolute Support Mission (RSM) in Afghanistan in 2004, and 860 Georgian servicemen are still serving in the Alliance's contingent in Afghanistan.

NATO will start withdrawing its troops from Afghanistan on May 1 this year.
