Mariupol surrenders after 81 days under siege

The Mariupol resistance, which has left an important mark on the military history of the 21st century, has ended today.

According to Report, the city's defenders surrendered to Russian forces after an 81-day siege.

During this time, they terminated hundreds of Russian servicemen, including high-ranking officers, and significantly delayed the invasion of other parts of Ukraine.

According to the Mariupol mayor's office, at least 10,000 people were killed in Russia's aggression against the city.

The country's Azov Regiment was a main force defending Mariupol. Despite the complete siege, partial occupation and virtual helplessness of the defenders, the Azov Regiment and other Ukrainian servicemen in the city did not accept Russia's calls for surrender. For this reason, Russian forces have not yet been able to capture Mariupol, especially the Azovstal steelworks, which covers a quarter of the city.

It should be noted that Azov, which was able to gather patriotic circles of Ukraine around it, was established in May 2014 in Mariupol. In 2014-2015, it showed its strength in the defense of the city of Mariupol, as well as in the battles for Ilovaisk, Shyrokyne and Maryinka. The Russian leadership terms Azov as a "neo-Nazi group" and a "xenophobic" group for its ruthless struggle against the invaders, as well as for instilling Ukrainian patriotism in the country.
