Moldova's Court of Appeal extends house arrest of ex-president

The Chisinau Court of Appeal approved the prosecution's demand, extending the house arrest of former Moldovan President Igor Dodon until October 21, Dodon's lawyer Nikolay Posturusu told TASS, Report informs.

"The Court of Appeal approved the demand of prosecutors to extend the arrest for 30 days, until October 21," the lawyer said.

Dodon was detained at the end of May with charges of treason, unjust enrichment, corruption, and illegal financing of the party. The ex-president said he had evidence of innocence. He believes that the cases against him were initiated for political reasons to weaken the opposition Party of Socialists of the Republic of Moldova (PSRM), which he previously headed. The prosecutor's office also charged his wife with complicity in unjust enrichment, she was forbidden to leave the country, and her brother was placed under arrest in this case.
