"We are watching events in Georgia closely. The detention of the head of a major opposition party is of deep concern," the Alliance's Secretary General's Special Representative for the Caucasus and Central Asia, James Appathurai, wrote on his Facebook page.

"As a close partner and Aspirant, NATO expects Georgia to maintain the Euro-Atlantic democratic standards that it has worked so hard to meet and maintain. This includes resolving political differences through dialogue and avoiding polarising rhetoric and actions," he added.

EU Ambassador to Georgia Carl Hartzell also commented on the ongoing processes in the country. Noting that the political crisis in Georgia is deepening, the diplomat said that all parties must take responsibility and act in the country's interests and the people.
