Turkiye may appoint ambassador to Egypt

Turkiye may appoint an ambassador to Egypt to normalize relations after a 9-year break, said Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu, Report informs.

"It is essential to improve relations with Egypt. Both countries are necessary for many regions. Normalization of ties with Turkiye and Egypt is also important in the Eastern Mediterranean. It is also possible to appoint mutual ambassadors," he noted.

According to local media, Salih Mutlu Sen, a former representative of Turkey in the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, may be appointed ambassador.

Ankara has refused to recognize General Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, who came to power after the overthrow of Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi in 2013, as the legitimate head of state. The parties then recalled their ambassadors for consultations. Egypt then declared Turkiye's ambassador to Cairo "persona non grata." Ankara also responded accordingly.
