The Meralco Bolts player Chris Banchero became the first player in the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) to convert a four-point shot as they officially implemented the ruling in its Season 49 opening game between Meralco and the Magnolia Hotshots on Sunday at the Araneta Coliseum, Report informs via ABS-CBN News.
Banchero hit the shot at the 10:26 mark of the second quarter to overtake the Hotshots, 20-17, after trailing by four prior to that shot.
In the first period, his teammate Chris Newsome was the first to attempt the four-pointer.
Minutes later, another Bolts guard in Jolo Mendoza became the second-ever to sink the four-pointer. Coincidentally, both Banchero and Mendoza were guarded by Jerrick Ahanmisi.
The Philippine Basketball Association, starting from the 2024 PBA Governors' Cup, features a four-point line, stretching 8.2 m away from the basket, making it the first major professional 5×5 basketball league in the world to integrate a four-point field goal in its rules.
